soft pastel on sanded paper
9 × 12”
framed in a lovely white wood frame, double mat, and beautiful anti-reflective glass
The rock of the Bruce Peninsula is a constant presence in the lives of those who know the Bruce well. Stacks, usually referred to as ‘flowerpots’ are rock structures that are formed by wave erosion of the dolostone bedrock created during declining glacial lake and post glacial water levels. The flowerpot known as “Devil’s Monument” is the only ‘stack’ that exists on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula itself. While I am familiar with how they are formed, how they became an isolated pillar from the escarpment and eventually became separated from the escarpment itself, I was not familiar until recently of the indigenous name for them “Akandoowinini” and the ideas that are associated with them for indigenous people. My understanding is that they are seen as ancient sentinels, watching over the waters of the bay; their existence, telling us what has transpired in other geologic times.
